iTunes App Launch – Jan 2015 – Wheel of Life

From the school of “if you don’t like what’s out there, build your own!”

Here’s a little background into why I created my own app.

The Wheel of Life is already recognised in coaching circles as an insightful tool. It allows someone to review all areas of their life in the context of the full-360. It’s a tool I frequently use with new clients to start the process of assessing their landscape.

I have not been comfortable with the online or paper versions I’ve used to date. Most score current feelings only and I’ve had to create workarounds to include the additional step of ideal scores.

I wanted something that easily illustrated:

  • Current scores
  • Ideal or preferred scores
  • An easily identifiable map of the gap to represent the scale of change

I wanted something:

  • That wasn’t paper or fixed to a PC connection
  • With easy access to review regularly – sofa, commute – this is the modern world after all
  • That included notes functionality for some headline observations & to jot actions to initialise momentum
  • That was highly visual – pictures paint a thousand words
  • As streamlined as possible – life can be cluttered enough

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” – much quoted african proverb

When we want something created we often realise that we cannot do it all on our own.

Working with the talented people around me has been fantastic. I love the freedom of working for myself but I also love being part of a team that wants to deliver something. A complementary exchange of ideas or skills creates a powerful dynamic. It has even made me question my own ideas at times. I enjoyed that honesty and validation along the way.

I’ve also enjoyed upskilling and re-kindling skills I felt I’d lost touch with.

The outcome is an app I am happy to use and to point clients to. It’s a good start in self-monitoring. It can stay with someone for as long or as intermittently as it is needed.

The app does not exist to replace coaching sessions. The purpose of the app is to provide a tangible check & balance; whether that’s kick-starting a more objective view of one’s situation, or creating actions & reminders, or allowing easy access to something that supports regular reflection on progress – these are all valid uses of engaging with the app.
